Intro
Radical Red is developed by soupercell (also credited as Yuuiii), who first released it on PokeCommunity in July 2020. The creator grew up on classic hacks such as Pokemon Quartz, Ruby Destiny: Reign of Legends and Shiny Gold, and built Radical Red as the kind of challenge hack they wanted to play.
FireRed enhancement hacks are common, so Radical Red stands out by leaning into difficulty. soupercell has named Pokemon Clover and Vega as the hacks they admire most, and Radical Red follows the same idea: bosses with competitive-style teams, a soft level cap and very few ways to brute-force a fight.
Also, be sure to try out Pokemon Shiron Castle, or browse more completed hacks in our Fire Red ROM Hacks roundup.
Radical Red’s difficulty-focused design has influenced hacks well beyond Fire Red, too — it’s named as a direct inspiration by the creator of Pokemon Emerald Horizons.
Description
At its core Radical Red is a difficulty hack with a large feature set. Much like Drayano60’s expansion hacks, it makes almost every Pokemon obtainable and buffs weaker ones so more teams and playstyles are viable. It also adds a long list of quality-of-life features that remove most of the usual grinding chores.
The hack began as a joint project between soupercell and koala4: soupercell handled most of the technical work, while koala4 contributed balancing, most wild Pokemon placements, suggestions and testing. Later versions credit a larger team (see Credits below).
Features
This hack utilizes the Complete FireRed Upgrade engine (!!!!) and Dynamic Pokemon Expansion built by Skeli789, Ghoulslash, and others. These engines power most of the hack’s major features; the key ones are listed below.
Provided by CFRU & DPE
- Physical/Special split + Fairy Typing
- All Pokémon up to Gen 9 are obtainable (with some exceptions, see further down)
- Moves up to Gen 9, including some of the Isle of Armor DLC moves!

- Some optional side bosses will have their levels scale according to your team

How to Patch Radical Red (Official Method)
The creator distributes Radical Red as a patch, not a ROM. The official route is the Radical Red online patcher linked from the PokeCommunity thread, which offers v4.1 as the current patch.
- Use your own clean Pokemon FireRed (USA) v1.0 ROM, the dump known as “1636 – Pokemon Fire Red (Squirrels)”. The patch is built for this exact version, so other FireRed revisions or regions may not work.
- Open the online patcher, select that ROM and choose Radical Red v4.1 as the patch.
- Apply the patch and save the resulting .gba file. If v4.1 does not appear in the list, clear your browser cache and reload the patcher.
Emulators suggested by the creator: mGBA or VisualBoyAdvance on Windows, OpenEmu on Mac, My Boy! on Android and GBA4iOS on iOS. The hack is also compatible with real GBA hardware.
Download
You can also patch Radical Red yourself with the online patcher which Karthik has provided (original patcher from here). Simply supply a 1636 Pokemon Fire Red Squirrels ROM and choose a version to receive a patched Radical Red ROM. The pre-patched downloads above are v4.0 — for the current v4.1, use the patcher above. If you don’t see 4.1 on the Radical Red patcher you probably need to clear your browser cache.
Guide On The Difficulty Options
Hardest to Easiest
- Hardcore Mode goes without saying this is the hardest mode; there is some consideration made for the player (hence the presence of Min Grinding Mode) but it’s filled with a lot of unfair obstacles and silly team compositions.
- Restrict Mode prevents you from using a lot of the broken team compositions/set-up cheese, so it’s a bit harder than normal RR without the Hardcore ridiculousness
- Restrict Mode + Min Grinding much less grindy than the above option while also making the early game-mid game much easier. Probably the preferable option if you’re streaming a nuzlocke.
- Normal RR the mode the creator originally designed. It is a little grindy, but you can use many of the strongest Pokemon to their full potential.
- Min Grinding ModeIf you just want to play RR without the grind but still keep a bit of the challenge, then this is it. Another option if you’re streaming a nuzlocke but don’t like the restrictions of Restricted Mode. Game is overall slightly easier than normal RR since you’re on a much more even playing field.
- Easy Mode This is actually potentially easier than Easy Mode + Min Grinding Mode since you can use EVs to your advantage (as Boss pokemon won’t have them), although the early game is slightly more difficult & most people playing this game mode won’t bother with optimizing EVs. Even Easy Mode is still harder than the official games and most traditional ROM hacks.
- Easy Mode + Min Grinding Mode Pretty much allows you to play Min Grinding Mode while also being able to use items and Switch Mode. The early game is also a lot easier here as opposed to normal Easy Mode
